Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science program for Nov. 1

Central Colorado Humanists Press Release for November 1, Sunday Science:

“Aircraft Design and Operation for Safety” is the title of the next Sunday Science talk presented by the Central Colorado Humanists. It will take place at A Church at 419 D St. on November 1st at 10 am. The public is always welcome. A local favorite, Bill Samples, will be making the presentation.

How safe is flying? How does it compare to other common modes of transportation? The US Bureau of Transportation Safety creates annual reports to answer this question. How do governments and industry regulate the design and operation of aircraft for safety? It’s through many complex rules and processes, but Bill did this for a living and will give a high-level overview of how it works. At the end of this evidence-based presentation those with a fear of flying may come to an understanding that the trip to the airport is generally more dangerous than the flight itself for the airlines and less so for small planes.

Bill has a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Engineering Management. He worked as an Avionics Field Engineer for 2 years, an Avionics Reliability Engineer for 4 years and as an Avionics Systems Engineer for 32 years, working on electronics for aircraft and space vehicles. His responsibilities included trouble shooting and repair, quality assurance, accident investigation, and creating documents, procedures, and tests to ensure the safety of airborne equipment. Bill has been a pilot for 52 years holding Air Transport and Flight Instructor ratings with more than 7,000 hours of logged time. During his college years he earned money working as a commercial pilot carrying passengers and cargo.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the talk will start at 10 a.m. The Sunday Science

Hospitality Committee welcomes any contributions to the “treat table,” including fruit and baked goods. Coffee will be served.
