Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science program for Aug. 2
“APOE4: A Genetic Risk Factor for Alzheimer’s Disease” is the title of the Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science program for August 2. Gaylene Stevens will discuss the Apolipoprotein E4 gene as a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common form of dementia worldwide.
Stevens’ presentation will cover the basics of late onset Alzheimer’s and focus on Apolipoprotein E4 gene as a risk factor. Many people are now learning from genetic analysis that they carry one or two copies of this gene. What it means and how it impacts your risk for AD will be discussed. You will hear of current research directions to find therapeutics and also what modifications to your diet and lifestyle may lower your risk for AD.
Gaylene grew up in California’s Bay area, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Bacteriology at UC Davis. Family took her to the southeast, where she received her Master’s in Molecular Biology, did research and taught. She retired to Salida and enjoys hiking, biking, reading and skiing. She has a personal interest in the APOE4 gene as multiple relatives have passed away from AD.
Sunday Science takes place at A Church in Salida, at the corner of 4th and D Streets. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the talk will start at 10 a.m. The public is welcome. Admission is free so join us.
